WILLIAM BETTS: New Paintings 2008-2013

William Betts works on several different projects concurrently in an ongoing exploration of the intersection of the digital realm and the traditional craft of painting using various technologies, strategies, and processes to create his work. We offer 3 series: Line, Surveillance (canvas and mirror)  and Moiré. After a decade of residing and exhibiting while based in Houston, Texas, Betts has recently relocated and set up his studio in  Miami, Florida. As everyone tends to experience a shift in personal goals with the stimulus of change, the artist is in the midst of experimenting and creating art that will eventually lead to a brand new series for 2014/15.

The Jennifer Kostuik Gallery is pleased to present a selection of new paintings created in 2013, the last available colored mirror paintings and two large paintings from his 2008 Surveillance Series. All paintings by William Betts have been created from his personal source imagery, either by selecting from thousands of stills taken from the video camera he positioned, buying the rights to use video images from government surveillance cameras of USA highways, his photographs of Nature (forests, shorelines, flower bushes) abstracted for the Line Series, or his personal photographs of pool and beach scenes. He takes particular care to decide how large, small or irregular the paint drops will be for the impressionist results desired in each painting. The Line painting series ended in 2007 and is being explored and pushed into a vertical format with a new creation entitled Shift. Created from a photograph of a sunset near his new home on Miami Beach, Betts removes the color and uses the graduation of light refraction to create this excitingly elegant, three dimensional image.

The Creator’s Project recently interviewed William Betts about his unique use of technology in how he creates his art works. To view this informative interview, please click here: http://www.kostuikgallery.com/?section=Artists&a=3&artist=William+Betts&page=Videos
