A new portrait of the city of Cerveteri
The exhibition presents Etruscan civilisation in its Mediterranean context, through the history of one of its largest metropolises: Cerveteri. This city is the only one whose evolution we are able to retrace from its origins to the Roman conquest, and show in all its aspects: the city of the living and its necropolises, its political organisation and its relations with the East, Greece and Rome.
By comparing pieces from the major historical collections for the first time with the results of archaeological excavations conducted in recent decades in the heart of the ancient city and in the surrounding area, the exhibition will be able to draw a new portrait of this great city and illustrate the prestige and position it enjoyed in ancient Italy and the Mediterranean.
The scientific curatorship of the exhibition is by:
– Françoise Gaultier and Laurent Haumesser, Head Curators in the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities at the Louvre museum in Paris.
– Paola Santoro and Vincenzo Bellelli, respectively Director of the CNE-ESCIMA and researcher at the CNE-ISCIMA (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche-Istituto per los Studio delle civiltà italiche e del Mediterraneo antico) in Rome.
– Alfonsina Russo, Superintendant of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici dell’Etruria Meridionale
– Rita Cosentino, Director of the Museo Nazionale Cerite (Cerveteri).
